Can Probiotics Help you Defeat Celiac Disease?
Posted by adianutrition on August 22, 2012
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes gluten intolerance in patients afflicted with the disease. In these patients, the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies gluten particles as foreign invaders and the immune system located in the upper bowels begins to destroy the villi of the intestines in response. This leads to a medley of problematic symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping, indigestion, and fatigue.
Along with modifying one’s diet to include less or no gluten, patients can use probiotic supplements to strengthen their immune systems. The added strength to the immune system, coupled with with the ability of probiotics to distinguish between good and bad helpful substances and improve microbial balance in the intestines help make celiac disease much more manageable.
